PCIT-Toddler

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy with Toddlers

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy with Toddlers (PCIT-T) is an early intervention program that involves coaching parents while they interact with their 12 to 24-month-old children.  Through utilizing play therapy and teaching listening skills, parents are guided in the use of therapeutic parenting practices shown to decrease problematic behaviors, improve children's language, and encourage young children to follow directions.

PCIT-T implements special components to meet the needs of toddlers, which improve attachment and build emotional regulation in both the caregivers and children.

PCIT-T is appropriate for families with 12 to 24-month-old toddlers who struggle with:

  • Tantrums
  • Aggression (hitting, biting, pinching)
  • Fussiness (screaming, whining, crying)
  • Anger, frustration, head-banging
  • Attachment difficulties (rejection of parent, difficult to comfort)
  • Separation anxiety or withdrawal from parent
  • Developmental concerns (language delay  or Autism diagnosis)
  • Parental stress (anxiety, difficulty coping, lack of confidence)
