Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a relatively new intervention in the world of psychotherapy that uses the brain's natural tendency toward healing to bring about rapid emotional recovery from painful or traumatic life events.
Through EMDR, the therapist assists the client in accessing and processing traumatic memories in order to facilitate resolution or "closure." This is accomplished by creating a vivid image of the painful memory, acknowledging negative beliefs, identifying related emotions and body sensations, and finding closure.
